The Symptoms of Mono

the symptoms of monoThe Symptoms of Mono start showing after the incubation period; which is about 4 to 6 weeks. During the incubation period symptoms of mono (mononucleosis) do not appear, so it’s difficult to know if you actually have the mono disease. The incubation period is shorter in children than adults. The mono disease or glandular fever is an infectious disease caused by herpes virus (EBV) and transmitted through mucus and saliva. Mono is often called as kissing disease – transmitted and spread in several ways and not just kissing; other ways like sipping each other drinks etc. Mono is most common among teenagers and young adults. To treat this disease at earliest, one should know the symptoms of mono before it becomes worst.

Mono is also named as glandular fever because of the inflamed glands or lymph nodes. Most common symptoms of mono are fever and sore throat. Mono symptoms vary since some people experience mild symptoms while others have severe symptoms.

Among the major symptoms of mono, fatigue and weakness are the visible symptoms. Mono sufferers feel extremely weak and lethargic. Similarly, various other symptoms of mono are also seen in people like flu, fever, sore throat, swollen tonsils and headache. Some patients also complained about skin rashes, decrease in appetite and nausea. Fever may be present for 2 weeks while the swollen lymph nodes persist for long time. Symptoms of mono are much severe and long lasting in adults than in children

Following are the most common signs and symptoms of mono:

  • Fever
  • Flu
  • Fatigue (Lethargy)
  • Headache
  • Skin rash
  • Swollen, sore throat
  • Decrease in Appetite
  • Nausea
  • Swelling of the glands
  • Swollen Lymph nodes – particularly of neck and armpit areas
  • Swelling of the Spleen
  • Yellow Discoloration of the skin (Jaundice)

If a person is infected with EBV, he/she might not experience any symptoms at early stage as symptoms of mono recur at a later period. For that reason mono disease can only be diagnosed with proper observation of symptoms. Seek proper medical examination and treatment at earliest if you are exhibiting symptoms of mono.
